tom ford fall/winter 2012. unlike most collections which saturate the media for public viewing directly after their runway shows take place, designer tom ford keeps his collection under wraps a little longer.

ford’s audience was first granted a teaser by way of video & now they’re privy to a lookbook of the collection based on a full & coherent aesthetic. fw12 brings the expected ‘tom ford opulence’ for winter: plush fur vests, capes & coats, reptile leather from the neck down to the toes, bird feathered column & an industrial, androgynous edge by way of gold plating & sharp tailoring.

bouchra jarrar haute couture spring 2012. endless questions about the future & purpose of haute couture are frequently asked w/in the fashion industry. designer bouchra jarrar state’s her answer: couture needs to be modern, it needs to be daywear & it needs to be tailored. jarrar’s collection of expertly fitted flannel trousers, sculpted jackets, collars made of fur & knitwear present the rigour in her life.

the haute couture collection suddenly loosens up & the mood unexpectedly changes: a silk flower print dress, a-line tops, asymmetrical beading across the shoulders as well as a shimmering version w/a sliced open back. although the pieces are beautiful & wearable, this is where jarrar seems less at ease.

nonetheless, bouchra jarrar offers a collection filled w/wearable clothing for the modern woman whose life is filled w/more work days & corporate meetings (& lots-o-cash) than gala openings & debutante balls.

christophe josse haute couture spring 2012 show is held at a beautiful salon in the 8e arrondissement of paris. w/its exquisite gold ornamentation & crystal chandeliers, the venue is the perfect setting for a princess.

josse’s couture walks the runway in a shimmery palette of pale blonds, peachy pinks, soft pearl grays, regal chartreuse & hot pink. his combination of various materials create a visually surprising collection. for instance, a shell pink blouse paired w/soft crocodile scales of a pencil skirt w/a “fabergé” finish. however, the elegant columns are the shining stars of the show. my eyes widen at the sight of the hot pink gown — a neckline adorned w/pyramid studs, a circumference of details at the waist & fluid, cascading folds.

[chloé fall/winter 2012] is about a british girl falling for the classic elements of paris,” says clare waight keller, a brit herself who moved to paris when she assumed creative director of the house.

fw12 is a mix of english sportswear w/the polish & refinement of the french. hooded parkas, sweatshirts & loose skirts are re-imagined in delicate laces & silks in a calm pastel palette. outerwear is the collection’s main strength & knitwear comes in second. the problem: leather bloomers w/elasticized hems that hit south of the knee. these ‘abbreviated’ pants made multiple appearances on paris’ fashion week runway at chloé & they weren’t doing the models any favours. also, keller’s ‘autobiographical’ collection excludes seasonal ‘it’ pieces that are expected.

the chloé fw12 collection confines itself somewhere between daytime casual & daytime dressy – appealing, i’m sure, to the girl who wants effortlessness.

elie saab couture spring 2012 is even more diaphanous than prior seasons. the slimmer lines & embroidered patterns of his long flowing skirts (saab’s specialty) are sweet, brilliant & virginal. tone-on-tone embroidery of sparkling flowers give a lighter feel compared to his recent couture collections. on the runway he showed full-skirted party frocks & slim evening gowns in a rainbow of pastel shades, nearly all of them sparkly. what separates one from the next is the cut of the neckline, presence or absence of sleeves, length of a train & the occasional cape. the oversize botanical print is nearly regarded as an afterthought amid the white, pink, peach, yellow, green & blue. despite all the handwork, these dresses—w/the exception of an uncharacteristically heavy wedding gown—appear almost weightless.
